Classmate Beta
From one tired parent to another: Let's make writing / 作文, and spelling / 听写 less like squeezing toothpaste.

Our Story
Hi, we're Karen & Sam. Like many of you, our dream is for our kids to write beautiful stories on their own, ace their spelling, and actually enjoy the learning process.
The Reality at Home
But the reality of homework was completely different. Sitting down to write a composition—whether it was English or Chinese—felt like a weekly battle. Between our own limited bandwidth to constantly supervise, and their struggle with vocabulary (or Chinese “stroke amnesia”, forgetting characters the moment they pick up a pencil), getting a story out was like squeezing a dry tube of toothpaste.
Even spelling tests and 听写 required us to sit there and dictate words one by one when we were already juggling a million other chores. It was exhausting for all of us.
The Traditional Tuition Trap
We looked into traditional tuition, but quickly realized its biggest flaw: the feedback loop is completely broken. Kids write a whole 400-word essay in silence, hand it in, and days later they just get back a page bleeding in red ink. Because tutors can't sit with every child to guide them paragraph-by-paragraph, they default to the “copy-paste” method—forcing kids to rote-memorize model essays and rigid templates. Sure, memorizing essays might scrape them a decent grade in exams, but it kills their creativity and completely stunts their real writing development.
The Pivot
We knew AI tools could help, so we tried them. They kinda worked, but we quickly realized a massive problem: raw AI is too open-ended for a primary schooler. Kids at this age don't need a bot that just writes the essay for them. They need structured guardrails, step-by-step learning, and a safe space that actually teaches them how to build a story and practice independently.
The Solution
So, we built StorySqueeze (挤挤写作) for our own kids.
When you set up your child's profile, you simply choose their second language. StorySqueeze instantly adapts to support both English and their Mother Tongue (currently supporting Chinese, with Malay and Tamil coming soon!) across our two main features:
✏️ The Blank Page (Composition)
Whether it's an English essay or a Chinese 作文, kids use voice dictation to speak their raw ideas. Our AI acts as a friendly coach, providing instant, paragraph-by-paragraph feedback—guiding them to add descriptive vocabulary scene-by-scene. Once their ideas are locked in, they write the final story on real paper, snap a photo, and our AI (powered by Gemini) reads their handwriting to provide encouraging grading and personalized coaching.
📝 The Constant Dependency (Spelling & 听写)
Kids snap a photo of their weekly school spelling list—English words or Chinese characters. Our smart scanner reads the words instantly and runs a voice-dictated self-test for them. They practice their handwriting independently, at their own pace, while parents get their evenings back.
The Invitation
It completely changed the dynamic in our house. We thought: If this is useful for us, it could be a lifesaver for fellow parents too. We are opening up a small, free “Classmate Beta” for a handful of parents who want to test this out with their kids. It's a work in progress, but we'd love for you to try it.
P.S.Since this is an early beta, your feedback is everything! If your child loves it, or if you have ideas on how we can make it better, please let us know. Let's build something great for our kids together.
Frequently Asked Questions
"Will this just write the essay for my child and make them lazy?"
Absolutely not. StorySqueeze is designed as a Coach, not a ghostwriter. The AI will not generate a full essay for them to copy. Instead, it listens to your child's raw ideas and asks guiding questions to prompt them to expand their vocabulary and structure their thoughts on their own.
"Is the AI safe and age-appropriate?"
Yes. We don't just plug kids into the open internet. StorySqueeze uses a backend "Auto-Sanitizer". This means the AI is heavily restricted with strict guardrails to keep the environment 100% focused on educational goals. It's a closed, safe sandbox for learning.
"If they speak their essays, how will they learn to write physically for exams?"
This was our biggest concern too! Voice dictation is only used for the initial ideation phase to overcome the dread of the blank page. For the final step, your child writes the composition on real paper. They snap a photo, and our app uses advanced AI to read their handwriting, grade it, and offer coaching. Combined with our photo-to-dictation spelling/听写 feature, they are actively practising their handwriting retention every single week!
